abstract = {{Key management in opportunistic networks is a challenging problem that cannot be solved with existing solutions. In this paper, we analyze the requirements of key management in the framework of opportunistic networks and content-based forwarding. We then present a specific key management scheme that enables the bootstrapping of local, topology-dependent security associations between a node and its neighbors along with the discovery of the neighborhood topology, thanks to the use of pseudonym certificates and encapsulated signatures. This key management solution relies on two phases: a first phase where nodes are connected to an Identity Manager that provides them with unique pseudonyms to prevent Sybil attacks, and a second phase where the opportunistic communication and the security associations bootstrapping take place without the need for the Identity Manager. This solution with an offline Identity Manager is well-suited to opportunistic networks and can be used as an anchor to provide end-to-end confidentiality based on local and self-organized key management.}},

@article{Dorogovtsev2010a,
abstract = {We obtained Pearson's coefficient of strongly correlated recursive networks growing by preferential attachment of every new vertex by m edges. We found that the Pearson coefficient is exactly zero in the infinite network limit for the recursive trees (m=1). If the number of connections of new vertices exceeds one (m > 1), then the Pearson coefficient in the infinite networks equals zero only when the degree distribution exponent y does not exceed 4. We calculated the Pearson coefficient for finite networks and observed a slow power-law-like approach to an infinite network limit. Our findings indicate that Pearson's coefficient strongly depends on size and details of networks, which makes this characteristic virtually useless for quantitative comparison of different networks.},

@article{Baxter2010b,
abstract = {{We consider bootstrap percolation on uncorrelated complex networks. We obtain
the phase diagram for this process with respect to two parameters: \$f\$, the
fraction of vertices initially activated, and \$p\$, the fraction of undamaged
vertices in the graph. We observe two transitions: the giant active component
appears continuously at a first threshold. There may also be a second,
discontinuous, hybrid transition at a higher threshold. Avalanches of
activations increase in size as this second critical point is approached,
finally diverging at this threshold. We describe the existence of a special
critical point at which this second transition first appears. In networks with
degree distributions whose second moment diverges (but whose first moment does
not), we find a qualitatively different behavior. In this case the giant active
component appears for any \$f\>0\$ and \$p\>0\$, and the discontinuous transition is
absent. This means that the giant active component is robust to damage, and

In particular, for second-order phase transitions, independent of the dimension

Edwards-Anderson model with d\_0=2 is not thermodynamically stable under graph

abstract = {{The basic notion of percolation in physics assumes the emergence of a giant
connected (percolation) cluster in a large disordered system when the density
of connections exceeds some critical value. Until recently, the percolation
phase transitions were believed to be continuous, however, in 2009, a
remarkably different, discontinuous phase transition was reported in a new
so-called ``explosive percolation'' problem. Each link in this problem is
established by a specific optimization process. Here, employing strict
analytical arguments and numerical calculations, we find that in fact the
``explosive percolation'' transition is continuous though with an uniquely
small critical exponent of the percolation cluster size. These transitions
provide a new class of critical phenomena in irreversible systems and
processes.}},

@article{Baxter2010a,
abstract = {We introduce the heterogeneous-\$k\$-core, which generalizes the \$k\$-core, and
contrast it with bootstrap percolation. Vertices have a threshold \$k\_i\$ which
may be different at each vertex. If a vertex has less than \$k\_i\$ neighbors it
is pruned from the network. The heterogeneous-\$k\$-core is the sub-graph
remaining after no further vertices can be pruned. If the thresholds \$k\_i\$ are
\$1\$ with probability \$f\$ or \$k \geq 3\$ with probability \$(1-f)\$, the process
forms one branch of an activation-pruning process which demonstrates
hysteresis. The other branch is formed by ordinary bootstrap percolation. We
show that there are two types of transitions in this heterogeneous-\$k\$-core
process: the giant heterogeneous-\$k\$-core may appear with a continuous
transition and there may be a second, discontinuous, hybrid transition. We
compare critical phenomena, critical clusters and avalanches at the
heterogeneous-\$k\$-core and bootstrap percolation transitions. We also show that
network structure has a crucial effect on these processes, with the giant
heterogeneous-\$k\$-core appearing immediately at a finite value for any \$f \> 0\$
when the degree distribution tends to a power law \$P(q) \sim q^{-\gamma}\$ with
\$\gamma \< 3\$.},

abstract = {{Evolutionary theory predicts that kin relations will be distinct from friendships, but recent studies have suggested a degree of similarity between these two types of relationships. In this longitudinal study, we examined the influence of kinship on the maintenance costs of social relationships. We followed 25 students over an 18-month period as they made the transition from school to university and examined the association between kinship, relationship maintenance and decay. The emotional intensity of friendships, in comparison to kin relations, was more sensitive to decreases in contact frequency and more sensitive to decreases in the number of activities done together. These results demonstrate that important differences between kin relations and friendships emerge when the relationships are considered longitudinally and suggest that the costs of maintaining friendships are much higher than the costs of maintaining kin relations.}},

@article{Boldrini2010b,
abstract = {In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs), the mobility of the network users can heavily affect the performance of networking protocols because it causes sudden connectivity changes and topological variations. This is even more important in recent promising paradigms proposed in this field, such as opportunistic and delay tolerant networks. For this reason, it is important to understand the characteristics of the user movements in order to properly handle mobility when designing networking protocols for mobile ad hoc networks. In addition, it is highly desirable to have a mobility model that accurately reproduces the user mobility, thus enabling researchers to evaluate, either analytically or by means of simulations, their protocols under realistic mobility conditions. Recently, there have been many studies aimed to uncover the nature of human movements. In this paper, based on recent literature, we identify three main properties that are fundamental to characterize human mobility. Then, we propose a mobility model (HCMM) that integrates all these three features. To the best of our knowledge, the model proposed is the first one that combines notions about the sociality of users with spatial properties observed in real users movement patterns, i.e., their preference to spend time in a limited number of popular locations and to preferentially select short distances over longer ones. We study the HCMM both through simulation and analysis. Based on this study, we highlight some of its important temporal and spatial features, and we show that they are correctly reproduced in terms of key indicators such as jump size and inter-contact time distribution.},

To develop reliable data exchange and communications both protocols and services can be enhanced exploiting context and content information, defining thus a novel data-centric communication paradigm. In this demo we present a social- aware content sharing service based on the exchange of a combination of the user personal information, interests, social relationships and information related to shared contents. In this way, the system is able to implement cooperative downloading mechanisms allowing users to share files even they will never be directly connected.},

abstract = {The recent boom of large-scale online social networks (OSNs) both enables and necessitates the use of parallelizable and scalable computational techniques for their analysis. We examine the problem of real-time community detection and a recently proposed linear time\—O(m) on a network with m edges\—label propagation, or \“epidemic\” community detection algorithm. We identify characteristics and drawbacks of the algorithm and extend it by incorporating different heuristics to facilitate reliable and multifunctional real-time community detection. With limited computational resources, we employ the algorithm on OSN data with 1\×106 nodes and about 58\×106 directed edges. Experiments and benchmarks reveal that the extended algorithm is not only faster but its community detection accuracy compares favorably over popular modularity-gain optimization algorithms known to suffer from their resolution limits.},

abstract = {Studies of active personal networks have primarily focused on providing reliable estimates of the size of the network. In this study, we examine how compositional properties of the network and ego characteristics are related to variation in network size. There was a negative relationship between mean emotional closeness and network size, for both related and unrelated networks. Further, there was a distinct upper bound on total network size. These results suggest that there are constraints both on the absolute number of individuals that ego can maintain in the network, and also on the emotional intensity of the relationships that ego can maintain with those individuals.},

@article{Ostilli2009a,
abstract = {Given a network and a partition in n communities, we address the issues of 'how communities influence each other' and 'when do two given communities communicate'. We prove that, for a small-world network, a simple superposition principle applies among communities and each community plays the role of a microscopic spin governed by a sort of effective TAP (Thouless, Anderson and Palmer) equation. The relative susceptibilities derived from these equations calculated at finite or zero temperature (where the method provides an effective percolation theory) give us the answers to the above issues. As for the already studied case n = 1, these equations are exact in the paramagnetic regions (at T = 0 this means below the percolation threshold) and provide effective approximations in the other regions. However, unlike the case n = 1, asymmetries among the communities may lead, via the TAP-like structure of the equations, to many metastable states whose number, in the case of negative short-cuts among the communities, may increase exponentially fast with n and glassy scenarios with a remarkable number of abrupt jumps take place. Furthermore, as a by-product, a natural and efficient method for detecting the community structure of a generic network emerges from the relative susceptibilities.},

@inproceedings{Allen2008a,
abstract = {As technology progresses, we are seeing increasing numbers of small devices that have the capability to store, process and forward information in our everyday physical environments. Increasingly, this is opening up the opportunity to generate, collect and communicate new knowledge and information in diverse aspects of human life. However this raises significant challenges for communication and content acquisition, as new levels of flexibility, adaptation and dynamism are required. In particular, the traditional notion of always-on end-to-end network connectivity becomes inappropriate, and radical rethinking is necessary. The EU FET project Social Networking for Pervasive Adaptation (SOCIALNETS) seeks to overcome these challenges by understanding, modelling and exploiting the key characteristics that enable humans to adapt and exhibit agility beyond other species. Through developing the capacity for devices to socially network, we believe that there is significant potential to facilitate highly effective pervasive communication and content provision.},

A PSN is a recently devised type of communication based on physical proximity, where people encounter each other and their devices directly communicate within their communication range. D3N allows us to program distributed applications based on reactive behaviour in a distributed set of nodes. We exploit a functional language approach in designing D3N for the clean abstraction given by pure declarative languages, at the same time, taking an advantage of well defined semantics. In this paper, we show a fragment of D3N, describe the node runtime architecture, and illustrate its effectiveness through some examples.},
